The client wanted a customizable rear-view mirror air freshener that could be produced on demand and mounted discreetly behind the mirror.
The only available references were 3D scans of actual vehicle mirrors.
The challenge was to:
• Accurately interpret scan data
• Identify safe, unobstructed mounting zones
• Avoid interference with mirror shafts, sensors, and electronics
• Create a design that requires no assembly and supports personalization
I began by reverse engineering the mirror geometry from the provided 3D scans and using that data to drive the product design.
My contribution included:
• Cleaning and interpreting raw 3D scan data
• Identifying unobstructed regions behind the mirror for safe attachment
• Designing a single-piece clip geometry that fits multiple mirror types
• Creating a rear groove to hold double-sided adhesive tape
• Designing a sliding groove for a pre-cut fragrance insert
• Enabling a print-on-demand workflow for custom graphics
• Optimizing the part for injection molding
The final design delivers a minimal, discreet air freshener that fits cleanly behind real mirrors without interfering with sensors or mounts.
The product:
• Mounts securely using adhesive tape
• Requires no assembly or mechanical parts
• Uses a replaceable fragrance insert
• Supports on-demand custom printing
• Is suitable for scalable manufacturing
